Driving in Saskatchewan

Driving with an Iranian Driver's Licence

Table of Contents

Introduction

  • Upon arrival, you are allowed to drive in Saskatchewan using your original Iranian driver’s licence along with an official translation.
Please note that only translations issued by the Saskatoon Iranian Cultural AssociationSaskatoon Open Door Society, or a certified translator are accepted by both Saskatoon Police and SGI (Saskatchewan Government Insurance).
  • The International Driving Permit (IDP) obtained in Iran is only recognized as a translation of your original licence; it does not independently grant driving privileges.
  • If you enter Canada as a Permanent Resident (PR), you are allowed to drive with your Iranian license only for the first 90 days. After that, you must apply for a Saskatchewan driver’s licence.
  • If you enter with a work permit, study permit, or as a visitor, you can continue driving as long as your Iranian licence and residency status are both valid.

Good news: Having a valid Iranian driver’s licence and an official translation can make it easier to obtain a Saskatchewan license (more details will be explained in the Driver’s Licence section).

Saskatchewan Identification Card

If you do not need or want to obtain a Saskatchewan driver’s licence, it is strongly recommended to apply for a Saskatchewan Photo ID Card.
This card serves as official government-issued identification and proves your residency in the province (for more details, refer to the Driver’s Licence section).
